What Makes a Leader Memorable?

Some leaders earn our trust and respect in ways we remember for years. Others leave a very different impression.

I'm writing a book about relational intelligence in the workplace, exploring how leaders' awareness of themselves, others, and the situations around them influences their relationships and effectiveness.

I'd appreciate your help by sharing two experiences with leaders you've encountered.

I'm interested in what actually happened, how the leader responded, and why the experience stayed with you. Your observations will help me identify the qualities and behaviors that distinguish leaders who leave a lasting positive impression from those who do not.

1. A leader who left a lasting positive impression

Think of a leader who earned your trust or respect and left a lasting positive impression.

Describe a specific situation or interaction. What happened? What did the leader say or do? What made that experience meaningful or memorable?

Around 100 to 250 words is plenty. There is no limit.

2. A leader who left a lasting negative impression

Now think of a leader whose actions or way of relating to others diminished your trust or respect, or left a lasting negative impression.

Describe a specific situation or interaction. What happened? What did the leader say or do? Why did that experience stay with you?

Around 100 to 250 words is plenty. There is no limit.

3. What made these leaders different?

Considering both experiences, what do you believe most clearly distinguished these two leaders?

Were the differences related to their personal qualities, values, self-awareness, understanding of others, judgment, communication, or skills? What mattered most to you?

Around 100 to 250 words is plenty. There is no limit.

How your stories will be used

Your submission is anonymous. Please do not include names or details that could identify specific people or organizations.

I will review the experiences to identify recurring themes and patterns that distinguish leaders who leave a lasting positive impression from those who do not. These findings will help shape the insights and examples presented in my forthcoming book.

Participation is voluntary, and you may skip any question. Selected experiences may be paraphrased or incorporated into the book without identifying the people or organizations involved.

A personal thank-you

If you contribute, I'd be pleased to send a free copy of the book, when it is published, to the first 50 people who let me know. Since submissions are anonymous, simply let me know separately that you participated.
